Fort St. John has matured significantly in recent years. Planning has included infrastructure that contributes to the quality of life in the city.
These include: Enerplex, Hospital, Cultural Centre, Swimming Pool, Arenas, and many other amenities. These amenities contribute to improving the quality of life and a sense of community, which in turn attract and retain a skilled workforce and their families.
The arts community has also blossomed significantly in recent years, and in particular the music scene in Fort St John can now be considered second to none. This strong music scene resulted in the City of Fort St John declaring us the “Music Capital of Northern British Columbia” in 2009
A number of local businesses have recognized the local talent by providing venues for musicians to perform. However, sadly lacking is a permanent outdoor venue in the city for staging performances.
A recent poll by Northern Groove on their website (www.northerngroove.com) asking what people thought of the idea of a community stage has resulted in the some of the largest number of hits and comments the website has experienced. All comments are strongly supportive of the idea.
A few key members of the local music scene have taken the initiative to organize and see to the viability of this project.
We have investigated a site in Centennial Park (see below) which we think proves idea for the concept. We have already started contacting businesses and we don’t think we’ll have any problems raising money or getting other forms of support. We’re also hoping to have a fund-raising concert at the proposed site sometimes this summer.
We have contacted other cities to get ideas on design and cost and feel a simple, clam-shell design will be the most functional and cost effective.
